Websites & marketing for builders

There are 59,685 domestic building firms registered in the UK, and the number has risen 14.0% since 2021. Here is how they win customers online, and what a builder’s website needs to do.

Building work is a big, slow decision. Homeowners planning an extension or renovation often spend weeks researching, and they want to see proof before they let anyone near their house: finished projects, how the firm works and what past customers say.

That means a builder's website works more like a portfolio and a reassurance than a brochure. The firms that win are usually the ones that show their work and explain their process clearly.

The UK market for domestic building firms

The number grew 14.0% between 2021 and 2026, well ahead of the +0.8% for UK businesses overall, so more firms are competing for the same customers.

96% of them have fewer than 10 employees, 14% are sole proprietors and 84% are limited companies. Most are small operations, so a clear, quick website is a genuine way to stand out from competitors who have not looked after theirs. The ten areas with the most firms hold about 31% of the UK total.

What a builder’s website needs to do

  • A project gallery with real before-and-after photos and short write-ups of each job
  • A clear explanation of how you work: survey, quote, timeline and how stages are agreed
  • Pages for each type of work you do (extensions, loft conversions, renovations, new builds)
  • Reviews, and references customers can ask about where they are happy to be named
  • Company details and any scheme memberships you hold, shown honestly
  • A quote form that asks for the type of project, the postcode and a rough timescale

Mistakes we see

  • A few small, low-quality photos for projects worth tens of thousands of pounds
  • No explanation of how the job will run
  • One page for every kind of building work
  • Vague claims instead of real examples

How we would approach it

  1. Bespoke web design. A strong portfolio and a clear process page do most of the selling for bigger projects.
  2. SEO. Customers search for the type of work plus their area, so project pages can bring in well-qualified enquiries.
  3. Meta and Google ads. Facebook and Instagram can put finished projects in front of homeowners who are planning work.

Questions from domestic building firms

What should a builder's website show?

Real photos of finished projects, what the work involved, how you run a job, reviews from past customers and clear ways to get in touch. Showing your process builds confidence for big jobs.

How do builders get more leads online?

By ranking for the work they want, such as extensions or loft conversions in their area, and by showing enough proof that visitors feel safe getting in touch.

Is a portfolio page enough?

It is a start, but pages for each type of work and each area you cover help you appear in more searches, and a clear process page answers the questions customers ask before they enquire.

How many domestic building firms are there in the UK?

ONS counts 59,685 domestic building firms registered for VAT and/or PAYE in the UK for 2026. That figure excludes firms below the VAT threshold that are not registered for PAYE, so the real number is higher.

Where are most domestic building firms based?

By number of firms, the biggest concentrations are in London, Cornwall and Buckinghamshire. Per 10,000 residents, Epping Forest, Hertsmere and Newry, Mourne and Down come out highest.
